People often think of filmmaking and programming as opposite ends of the spectrum—one purely creative, the other strictly logical. But in practice, they share a fundamental goal: constructing an experience from discrete, intentional pieces.

Storyboarding is Wireframing

When you storyboard a film, you are planning the user journey. Where does their attention go? What information do they need right now? Wireframing an application requires the exact same empathy and spatial awareness.

Editing is Refactoring

In the edit room, you trim the fat to make the story flow better. In the codebase, you refactor to make the logic clearer. Both processes are about finding the most elegant, concise way to express a complex idea.

A codebase is just a script that the computer performs. A film is just a program that the audience runs in their minds.

The Synthesis

Being a programmer makes me a more structured filmmaker. Being a filmmaker makes me a more empathetic programmer. The medium changes, but the craft of creation remains surprisingly consistent.
